Has Indie become the new Mainstream? I think so. I have been a fan of Indie music ever since I was in 7th grade, now I'm a senior in high school. My main motivation for seeking Indie music was my desire to be different from everyone else...everyone who just seemed to dress the same and listen to the same music and of course, watch MTV to "discover" the latest thing. It truly saddens me to see the Indie subculture seeping its way into the Mainstream where you (the original individual) just seem to fit-in with the rest of the populace. Not only that, but the music changes with the transition...bands who where once Indie and who are now Mainstream change their sound just to sound appealing to the crowd. In my opinion, when the band starts out Indie they make music for the joy of making music, but once they become Mainstream they do it for the joy of making money. I have been critical of the way everything is playing out...people and their MP3s sharing music and building up the Indie into the Mainstream...I'm proud of myself for not molding into the MP3 craze...I'm happy to stick with my CDs...I don't care when people criticize me. After all, I am anti-conformist. I also feel critical of MTV's involvement in the process...their show Subterranean on MTV2 "showcases" the newest bands...I myself have never watched the show nor care to...I have been told about it by people who I've asked how they discovered some bands, bands I have been fighting to keep secret for the past year. If you watch or have watched the show chances are you are probably one of those Mainstream zombies checking out the latest cool thing. I just hope that this new craving for the Indie subculture by the Mainstream dies down soon...I feel like I'm constantly running away from molding into the Mainstream's grasp...I'm one of the few who is still standing strong keeping Indie underground where it belongs.
This is my first post it would be great to hear feedback.
